Summit Picks Up First Win of The Season In Crosstown Rivalry Game

In a crosstown rivalry matchup between two teams who share the same stadium; the Summit Skyhawks (0-1-1) faced the home team AB Miller Rebels (0-1) Friday September 12, 2014 at AB Miller High School. Summit is coming off of a disappointing showing against Redlands East Valley. AB Miller had a bye week for Week 1 as they were on the road during Week 0 which resulted in a 40-6 defeat against Barstow. Both teams are looking for their first win of the season.

Midway through the 1st quarter Summit failed to convert on a red zone scoring opportunity with a missed field goal that kept the score 0-0. The Skyhawks failed to complete the drive with a score after having a 45-yard pass completion that initially placed them in a scoring position. Summit later capitalized with a score via a long touchdown completion that resulted in a hookup from Quarterback Cameron Coleman to Wide Receiver Damian Alloway that gave Summit the lead of 7-0 following the successful PAT attempt early in the Second Quarter. This would be the only score of the first half, which saw the Sky Hawks take a 7-0 lead into the halftime break. AB Miller had multiple chances to take advantage of decent field position in the opponent’s territory but failed to keep their Quarterback upright; this resulted in huge negative plays for the Rebels.

Starting off the second half Damian Alloway from theSkyhawks went coast to coast by returning the opening kick for a touchdown. The touchdown was negated due to a clip in the back. A few plays later he would get his chance to score once again on a 19-yard touchdown catch to give the Skyhawks a double-digit lead 14-0 after the successful extra point. Things started to go the Skyhawks’ way on the following kickoff when they attempted a surprise onside kick which they recovered. Summit failed to take advantage of the great opportunity and had a botched punt attempt that went over the punters head. This gave the Rebels the ball at the ten-yard line in Skyhawks territory. Once again, the Rebels failed to convert by throwing an interception in the endzone to Isaac Madrid. The very next play Damian Alloway ran the ball right down the sideline for an 80 yard touchdown run that gave the Skyhawks a 3 touchdown lead 20-0 after the blocked extra point with 4:41 left in the third quarter.

Early in the 4th quarter Dangelo Vasquez completed a beautiful diving touchdown catch that would ideally make SportsCenter’s top ten plays of the night. He would get flagged for the unsportsmanlike conduct after the play but it wouldn’t matter since the Skyhawks now led 27-0 in a contest that was deemed over. Midway through the 4th quarter AB Miller finally got on the board with a quarterback run of 2 yards by Bryan Lemus that brought the score to 27-6 after the failed 2-point conversion.

Their momentum was short lived on the next play that saw Skyhawks Running Back Stephen Carr complete a 80 yard touchdown run; luckily for the Rebels the run was cancelled due to a Skyhawks holding penalty. Due to that penalty the Rebels were able to get a safety out of the drive to decrease the Skyhawks lead to 27-8.

After the game Summit Skyhawks Wide Receiver Dangelo Vasquez was impressed with his performance and was thrilled to have their first victory of the season stating “I think I did good and just want to thank my coaches for putting me in position to make plays and my teammates for helping me as well, we all have each other’s back and its not about individual effort but team effort every single time we head out on the field”.

AB Miller Head Coach Justin Nast had something to say regarding his team’s missed opportunities to be successful in this game. He stated, “We made a lot of mistakes on our end but all the mistakes are correctable and I give my hat off to my kids they worked real hard and been down for a long time, we just haven’t had that string of luck with the ball bouncing our way in the past couple years at AB. I’m confident with a little bit of hard work were going to come back and be strong the rest of the season”.

Next week Summit looks to keep their winning streak going against Alta Loma while AB Miller looks to pick up their first win of the season against another rival Fontana High School.
