Riverside—The UC Riverside Men’s Soccer Team remained undefeated in Big West play Saturday evening, upending visiting Cal Poly, 1-0.
Dylan Smith (Anaheim, CA) provided the Highlanders with all the offense they would need in the 51st minute of play. The Mustangs were whistled for a foul in their defensive 18, and Smith stepped up to take the penalty kick. Cal Poly goalkeeper Erin Kam guessed correctly, diving to his right for the save, but Smith collected the rebound and scored on the put back to give UC Riverside the lead. It was the second score of the season for the sophomore.
Vincent Morales (Bellflower, CA) kept the Highlanders’ net clean for his third shutout of the season.
The victory snapped a three-match losing streak for UC Riverside against Cal Poly. The Mustangs won nine of the previous 10 meetings between the clubs.
This is the first time in the Highlanders’ 16-year history that they have started a Big West season undefeated through two matches.
UC Riverside hits the road next week, heading northward for matches at UC Davis on Thursday, October 6 at 1:30 pm PT, and at Sacramento State on Saturday, October 8 at 3 pm.
