Reign End Nine-Game Road Trip With 2-1 Loss to Eagles

Sheen scores lone goal for Ontario

LOVELAND, Colo. – The Ontario Reign (10-8-0-2), four-time Pacific Division Champions and proud affiliate of the NHL’s 2014 Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings and Winnipeg Jets, fell to the Colorado Eagles (11-5-0-0) by a 2-1 score in front of a crowd of 5,289 on Saturday night at the Budweiser Events Center.

The Reign opened the scoring early in the first period, as a failed breakout by the Eagles allowed Everett Sheen to take the puck at the offensive blueline and put a shot on net that resulted in a wide rebound off of goaltender Clarke Saunders. Sheen retrieved his own rebound and deposited it into the net past a sprawled Saunders.

The Eagles evened the score with a power-play goal at 7:51 when Jordan Kwas grabbed a rebound from a shot by Derek Rodwell and shot the puck past the glove of Jussi Olkinuora, with Brett Kulak picking up the secondary assist.

Colorado went ahead in the second period when Eagles forward Nathan Moon was hauled down on a breakaway at 17:28, and scored on the subsequent penalty shot by beating Olkinuora high to the glove side.

Despite pulling Olkinuora for an extra attacker in the waning moments of the third period, Ontario could not find the equalizing tally before time expired, bringing an end to its season-high nine-game road trip.

Olkinuora took the loss for Ontario with 19 saves; Saunders picked up the win with 32 stops.

Three Stars:
1. COL – Clarke Saunders
2. COL – Nathan Moon
3. COL – Jordan Kwas
